Americano format explained: rules, rounds and scoring

What is an Americano tournament?

In an Americano, you do not sign up as a fixed pair. Every round the draw builds new pairs, so over the course of the event each player partners several different people and faces the rest of the field.

Every game you win adds to your personal score. The final standings are individual, which makes Americano ideal for mixed-level groups and social evenings on the court.

Americano scoring

Each round is played to a fixed number of points — usually 16, 21 or 24 — and the points each pair takes are credited to both players individually.

A match ending 16-8 gives 16 points to each winner and 8 points to each loser, so even a losing round still contributes to your total. There are no sets and no advantage scoring, which keeps rounds short and predictable.

How many rounds and courts do you need?

A fair Americano needs a full rotation cycle: the number of rounds must divide evenly so every player ends up with the same number of games played.

Common setups look like this:

• 8 players, 2 courts — 7 rounds gives everyone the same number of games and every possible partner once.
• 10 players, 2 courts — 15 rounds, each player gets exactly 12 games.
• 12 players, 3 courts — 11 rounds with full partner coverage.
• 4 players, 1 court — 3 rounds covers all three possible pairings.

Common mistakes when organising an Americano

Uneven games played is the number one complaint: if the number of rounds is not a multiple of the fair cycle, some players sit out more than others and the ranking becomes unfair.

Repeated partners and repeated opponents are the second issue. A good draw penalises repetitions before it repeats a pairing, and rebuilds the remaining rounds when someone joins late or drops out.
